                                                               WELCOME TO MONTALTO ESTATE

A Living Heritage, A World-Class Destination

Montalto Estate is not just a workplace; it is a stunning, multi-faceted heritage landscape, a thriving commercial events venue, and a premier visitor destination in Northern Ireland. Encompassing spectacular woodlands, manicured grounds, and rich history, the estate welcomes tens of thousands of visitors who come to experience its beauty and unique atmosphere.

At Montalto, we balance historical preservation with modern, commercial excellence. As we look to the future, we are seeking a visionary horticultural leader to steward our grounds, elevate our presentation to ensure RHS-quality standards, and inspire the team that brings this estate to life every day.

The Opportunity

Head Gardener & Estate Landscape Manager (Historic Estate & Visitor Attraction)

We are seeking an exceptional operations-minded horticulturalist to take on the dual mantle of Head Gardener and Estate Landscape Manager.

In this role, you will report directly to the Operations Director and be fully responsible for the presentation, strategic development, and operational reality of our visitor destination. You will have the autonomy to influence future planting, drive machinery investment, and shape the estate culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Estate & Horticultural Leadership; Oversee the long-term seasonal planning, presentation, and maintenance of all gardens, woodlands, and the wider heritage landscape to impeccable standards.

  • Team Management; Direct, mentor, and develop the estate gardening and maintenance team, fostering a culture of pride, discretion, and excellence.

  • The Visitor Experience; Maintain an elite, RHS-quality aesthetic while balancing the high-footfall realities of a major public visitor attraction.

  • Operational & Financial Control; Manage infrastructure, machinery investments, health & safety competence, contractors, and annual budgets.

Candidate Profile

Who You Are

This role requires a unique blend of elite horticultural artistry and robust commercial acumen. You are likely an established Head Gardener, Horticultural Manager, or Grounds Manager currently working within a major castle estate, large visitor garden, or leading private estate.

Your Experience & Attributes

  • Horticultural Excellence; Exceptional plant knowledge matched with an understanding of RHS-quality presentation and heritage landscapes.

  • Proven Leadership; Experience managing an estate team and working directly alongside owners or directors to execute a shared vision.

  • Commercial Savvy; A strong track record in budget responsibility, contractor management, and balancing aesthetic ideals with operational realities.

  • Visitor-Centric Mindset; Experience in managing public-facing gardens that welcome tens of thousands of visitors annually.

  • Estate Competence; Practical knowledge of woodland management, estate machinery, infrastructure, and stringent health & safety protocols.

  • Communication; Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to act as an ambassador for the estate.

What We Offer

Investing in Your Growth and Well-Being

We believe in supporting our leaders so they can truly flourish. To that end, Montalto Estate offers a highly competitive and comprehensive package:

  • Competitive Salary & Pension

  • Accommodation: Live-in arrangements/Estate accommodation can be made available if applicable/possible.

  • Professional Development: A dedicated training budget, including opportunities to attend RHS shows and curated study tours.

  • Autonomy & Impact: True operational freedom to manage your budget, influence future planting schemes, and steer machinery and infrastructure investment.

Our Selection Process

A Two-Way Conversation

We want to ensure a perfect alignment of vision and culture. Our thorough recruitment includes:

Initial Competency Interview: A look into your background, leadership style, and technical capabilities.

The Final Selection: Moving beyond the standard interview room, the final stage will include a practical garden walk and presentation of the estate. This allows you to interact with the landscape firsthand and showcase how you would bring your vision to Montalto.
